Local roundup: Frazier wins 5th straight; Uniontown improves to 7-0
Dailan McManus scored 18 of his game-high 26 points in the first quarter as Frazier exploded to a 29-6 lead on the way to an 87-73 non-section win at California in boys basketball action on Thursday night.
McManus hit six 3-pointers as the Commodores (5-3) extended their winning streak to five after an 0-3 start. Frazier also got double-doubles from both Brock Alekson, with 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Brennen Stewart, with 11 points and 10 boards.
Darian Bateman also reached double figures for the Commodores with 16 points.
Vincent Manzella scored 19 points to pace the Trojans (0-6), who outscored the visitors 67-58 over the final three quarters but couldn’t overcome the big early deficit.
California also got 17 points from Noah Neil, 12 from Caden Monticelli and 11 from Jacob Ziolecki.
Uniontown 75, Auburn (Va.) 50; Uniontown 67, Central Tuscaloosa (Ala.) 55 – Uniontown picked up two more victories in the KSA Pre-Holiday Tournament in Orlando, Florida to improve to 7-0 on the season.
Calvin Winfrey III tallied a game-high 18 points and Jamire Braxton followed with 17 as the Red Raiders beat Auburn on Thursday. Notorious Grooms and Kelan Milsom contributed 13 and 11 points, respectively, for the Red Raiders.
Nick Millirons and Drew Royal each had 15 points for the Eagles (3-2).
Uniontown defeated Central out of Tuscaloosa on Friday with Winfrey again leading the way with 18 points and Grooms following close behind with 17.
The Red Raiders, who led 17-10, 29-24 and 46-39 at the quarter breaks, also got 12 points from Braxton and 10 from Milsom.
The Falcons (8-6) were led by King Larkin with 18 points and Javson Taylor with 15.
Charleroi 58, Waynesburg Central 41 – Jackson Keranko scored 17 points as the Cougars defeated the visiting Raiders in a Section 4-AAA game.
Bryce Large added 12 points for Charleroi (1-1, 2-5).
Cole Headlee tied for game-high honors with 17 points for Waynesburg (0-2, 2-6).
Chartiers-Houston 44, Jefferson-Morgan 39 – Avery Molek led all scorers with 25 points in helping the Bucs (6-1) stave off the host Rockets in a non-section game.
John Woodward led J-M (5-3) with 12 points and Dayten Marion chipped in with 11 points.
Monessen 65, Westinghouse 46 – Lorenzo Gardner poured in 33 points as the Greyhounds raced past visiting Bulldogs in a non-section game.
Monessen (4-1) led 30-27 at halftime then pulled away in the second half.
Terrel Wafford scored 14 points and Jakai Collins had 12 for Westinghous (0-1).
Elizabeth Forward 75, East Allegheny 57 – The host Warriors outscored the Wild Cats 43-22 in the middle two quarters to secure a non-section win.
Isaiah Turner pace EF (6-1) with 19 points and was followed by Tyler Basic (16) and Cy Herchelroath (14).
Troy Anderson scored 15 points for East Allegheny (2-5) which also got 12 points from Jordon Rondcu and 10 from Brennan Rutledge.
Southmoreland 72, Ringgold 55 – Noah Felentzer tossed in a game-high 30 points as the Scotties upped their record to 7-0 with a non-sectin victory over the visiting Rams.
Southmoreland led 13-8, 29-21 and 54-38 at the quarter breaks.
Ty Keffer tallied 15 points and Elliot Premus had 10 for the Scotties.
Zyair Dungee topped Ringgold (2-5) in scoring with 15 points.
Mount Pleasant 70, Ligonier Valley 52 – Dante Giallanardo tossed in a game-high 22 points and the Vikings pulled away in the second half to top the visiting Rams in a non-section meeting.
Chase McCloy followed with 18 points and Connor Pavlochak added 14 for Mount Pleasant (2-4), which led 29-27 at halftime before taking control with a 41-25 advantage the rest of the way.
Michael Varqulish-Graver led Ligonier Valley (2-5) with 17 points. Brian Wisniewski contributed 14 points and Parker Hollick had 11.
Gateway 82, Laurel Highlands 43 – The Gators (6-1) cruised past the visiting Mustangs (2-5) in a non-section game.
Gateway extended its winning streak to five while LH has lost four of its last five.
Girls basketball
Waynesburg Central 50, Albert Gallatin 39 – Kaley Rohanna scored a game-high 19 points, including three 3-pointers, and dished out 10 assists as the Lady Raiders stayed perfect on the season with a non-section victory over the visiting Lady Colonials.
Waynesburg led 9-6, 19-10 and 32-18 at the breaks.
Avery Davis added 10 points for the Lady Raiders (7-0), who also got 10 rebounds from Peyton Cowell.
Mya Glisan paced Albert Gallatin (1-6) with 17 points and Grayce Panos tossed in 14 points.
Mount Pleasant 50, Frazier 29 – The Lady Vikings held the host Lady Commodores to single digits each quarter in earning a non-section win.
Riley Gesinski and Grace Arrigo topped Mount Pleasant (6-2) in scoring with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Allie Yauch and Malana Burton each scored eight points for Frazier (4-5).
Mapletown 33, Propel Montour 26 – The Lady Maples rallied with a 14-5 edge in the fourth quarter to knock off the host Lady Legends in a non-section battle.
Propel Montour (2-6) trailed 13-7 at halftime but surged to a 21-19 lead after three quarters before Mapletown charged back to earn the victory.
Emma Zalar scored nine points for the Lady Maples (2-5).
The Lady Legends’ Alyssa Krasovsky also had nine points.
McGuffey 53, Carmichaels 13 – Taylor Schumacher, Lexi Ewig and Madison Gaso scored 10 points apiece as the Lady Highlanders (6-0) beat the host Lady Mikes (1-6) in a non-section game.
Serra Catholic 56, Yough 25 – Abby Genes had 18 points, Bri Battles scored 14 and Cate Clark chipped in with 10 as the Lady Eagles (7-1) soared past the host Cougars in a non-section game.
Autumn Matthews led the way for Yough (4-4) with 15 points.
South Allegheny 48, Southmoreland 43 – The Lady Gladiators (3-4) triumphed over the host Lady Scotties (0-7) in a non-section game.
