Local roundup: Falcons put away AG with big seventh inning
Gayden Gillott smacked a run-scoring double and a sacrifice fly in a seven-run fifth inning to help Connellsville pull away from Albert Gallatin on its way to an 11-3 non-section baseball victory at Thomas E. Sankovich Field on Thursday.
Jonathan Kelly had a single and a walk in the game-turning frame for the playoff-bound Falcons (9-9).
The game was tied 1-1 after two innings but Connellsville took the lead for good with three unearned runs in the third.
Cyrus Potkul’s run-scoring single got the Colonials within 4-2 in the top of the fifth.
Ethan Shultz had a single and two RBIs for the Falcons.
Winning pitcher Zach Knabenshue allowed one unearned run on one hit with four walks and four strikeouts in four innings.
Geno Valenti stroked three singles for Albert Gallatin (3-15). Cole Smith took the loss.
Franklin Regional 12, Uniontown 0 – Luke Williams homered and Blake Bertucci had three hits, including a pair of doubles, and three RBIs as the Panthers knocked off the host Red Raiders in a five-inning non-section game.
Anthony Mitchell added a double, single and three RBIs for Franklin Regional (10-7) which had two pitchers combine on a two-hitter.
Tyler Gasper and Brayden Hinzy each singled for the only hits for Uniontown (6-8).
Greensburg Salem 14, Brownsville 1 – Braedon Leatherman threw a no-hitter as the host Lions (6-4, 6-7) blanked the Falcons (0-12, 0-13) in a five-inning non-section game.
Noah Outley had three hits, including two doubles, and four RBIs for Greensburg Salem.
Elizabeth Forward 9, Yough 3 – Cy Herchelroath knocked in three runs with a pair of doubles and Charlie Nigut also doubled twice as the host Warriors defeated the Cougars in a non-section game.
JB Crovak doubled and singled for EF (9-9) which also got two hits from AJ Greene and a double from Mitchell Vuick.
Winning pitcher Zach Brewster threw a complete game.
Landon O’Donnell had three hits and losing pitcher Zander Aird contributed two hits and two RBIs for Yough (6-10).
South Park 6, Ringgold 0 — The Rams’ Eddie Frizzell was 2 for 3 and Andrew Sprinkle singled and stole two bases but it wasn’t nearly enough in a non-section loss to the visiting Eagles.
Losing pitcher Anthony Koziel struck out six and walked two.
Bentworth 16, Monessen 7 — Gavin-Linton Rush had three hits in Bentworth’s non-section victory over the visiting Greyhounds.
Linton-Rush tripled in the sixth, doubled in the second and singled in the third.
Ben Hayes had an RBI single in the first inning for the Bearcats.
Craig McDoanld knocked in a run with a single in the sixth for Bentworth. Zeek Malanosky hit a two-run double and Linton-Rush’s triple knocked one run home.
Trinity 5, Waynesburg Central 4 — Cam Schofield’s walk-off single led Trinity to a non-section victory over Waynesburg.
The Raiders scored the game’s first run before the Hillers plated three in the bottom of the first inning for a 3-1 lead.
Waynesburg scored three in the top of the fourth for a 4-3 advantage before Trinity tied the game in the bottom of the inning.
High school softball
Mount Pleasant 3, Connellsville 2 – Dani Trainer doubled and singled twice to help the Lady Vikings nip the host Lady Falcons in a non-section game.
Mount Pleasant (11-8) scored all three of its runs in the third inning and hung on from there.
Winning pitcher Gigi Stanek gave up one earned run on four hits with one walk and two strikeotus.
Kameron Kantorik singled twice for Connellsville (11-6). Losing pitcher Iris Burd allowed seven hits and two walks with seven strikeouts.
Elizabeth Forward 13, Uniontown 0 – Julia Resnik homered, tripled and knocked in two runs as the Lady Warriors extended their Section 2-AAAA winning streak to 35 with a five-inning win over the visiting Lady Raiders.
Berlyn Holibaugh had three hits, including a double, Addy Nigut doubled twice and Carlee Soukup tripled for Elizabeth Forward (12-0, 15-1).
Winning pitcher Shelby Telegdy tossed a two-hitter with no walks and four strikeouts.
Uniontown (8-4, 8-5) finished section play tied with Belle Vernon for second place, four games behind the first place Lady Warriors.
Southmoreland 13, Derry 7 – The Lady Scots scored two runs in each of the final five innings for a Section 3-AAA road victory.
Makayla Etling led Southmoreland’s attack with a pair of two-run home runs. Amarah McCutcheon went 4-for-4 with a triple, double, two singles and two RBIs for the Lady Scots (7-2, 12-2). Taylor Doppelheuer belted a two-run home run and drove in three runs. Gwen Basinger stroked a double and single and drove in a run. Kaylee Doppelheuer and Zoey Welling both contributed two singles to the 15-hit attack.
Winning pitcher Maddie Brown struck out 15 and walked two.
Sophia Doherty led Derry (1-9, 3-13) with a two-run home run, two singles and three RBIs.
Charleroi 16, Washington 4 – The Lady Cougars scored five runs in the first inning and never looked back in a Section 3-AA win over Washington.
Charleroi (8-4, 11-4) added three runs in the second and eight in the third before the 10-run mercy rule took effect in the fifth.
Lyla Brunner was 2 for 3 with a home run to lead Charleroi’s offense. Riley Jones and Maddie Lancy had one double apiece for the Lady Cougars.
Lancy, Ariahna Blouse, Avery Pendo and Sofia Celaschi each had two hits.
Blouse struck out six and walked one in earning the win.
Zkyiah Hines hit a home run for the Lady Prexies (1-8, 1-9) who also got a double from both Simone Ivery and Faith Partozoti.
Thomas Jefferson 12, Belle Vernon 2 – The Lady Jaguars scored three runs in the third and six in the fourth to defeat the Lady Leopards in a non-section game.
Ella Gruber had a home run and two RBIs for TJ (9-6). Teammate Emma Desiore doubled and knocked in three runs.
Sydney Stark had two hits, including a double, and one RBI for Belle Vernon (13-5) who also got a run-scoring single from Katie Sokol.
Greensburg Salem 4, Ringgold 0 – Alle Scarpa fired a shutout with nine strikeouts as the Lady Lions topped the visiting Lady Rams to earn a playoff spot in Section 2-AAAA.
Greensburg Salem’s win pulled them into a tie with Laurel Highlands, which lost at Albert Gallatin, for fourth place but the Lady Lions own the tiebreaker with their two-game sweep of the Fillies.
Mahayla Jones had two hits for the Lady Lions (5-7, 7-10).
Keystone Oaks 4, Brownsville 2 – The Lady Golden Eagles broke a 2-2 tie with two runs in the top of the eighth inning to outlast the host Lady Falcons and clinch a playoff spot.
The loss eliminated Brownsville (2-7, 3-9) from playoff contention. The Lady Falcons trailed 2-1 but pushed across a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to force extra innings.
Winning pitcher Kennadi Smith doubled and singled and Addi Schmid also had two hits for Keystone Oaks (3-7, 6-9) which also got a triple from Kylie Stahl and doubles from Nina Buckley and Emily Lambert.
Jordyn Davis and Alexa Pellick each had two hits and a stolen base for the Lady Falcons (2-7, 3-9) who also got a double and RBI from Mia O’Hern. Losing pitcher Ava Clark surrendered two earned runs on five hits with no walks and nine strikeouts.
OLSH 14, Beth-Center 1 – The Lady Chargers defeated the host Lady Bulldogs in a Section 3-AA game.
The loss leaves Beth-Center (4-6, 5-6) in a fourth-place tie with Burgettstown with two section games remaining.
