Local roundup: Bentworth closes season with 4-1 win over Eagles
Lucas Burt and Jacob Burt combined on a two-hitter and Linton Rush had two hits and an RBI as Bentworth closed its baseball season with a 4-1 non-section win over visiting Avella on Wednesday.
Ben Hayes also had two hits and scored a run for the Bearcats (5-11).
Lucas Burt started on the mound and held the Eagles (9-6) hitless through five innings but his no-hit bid was broken up in the sixth on Westley Burchianti’s one-out single to right field on an 0-2 pitch. He allowed one unearned run on the one hit with five walks with 11 strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings to earn the win.
Jacob Burt finished up with 1 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing a single to Bryce Wright and no walks with two strikeouts to notch the save. He got help in the field from Lucas Burt who moved to shortstop after leaving the mound and made a spectacular diving catch on Brian Martos’ looping line drive in shallow left field for the second out of the seventh inning.
It was the second sparkling combination by the two hurlers in 11 days as the duo combined to toss a no-hitter in a 1-0 win vs. Beth-Center on April 29.
The Bearcats used singles by Hayes, John Scott, Rush and Sam Wade and a bases-loaded walk by Anthony Puckey to produce two runs in the first inning against losing pitcher Wright.
Avella scored its lone run in the top of the second when Isaiah Bradick and Burchianti drew walks and pulled off a double steal with a throwing error allowing Bradick to come home.
Bradick reached base three times with two walks and a hit by pitch.
Bentworth doubled its lead in the bottom of the second when a double by Ty Watson, a walk by Lucas Burt, a passed ball and two errors produced two runs and a 4-1 advantage.
Wright allowed six hits and three earned runs with two walks and three strikeouts in two innings. Chaz Rush pitched well in relief with four scoreless innings for the Eagles.
Connellsville 5, Baldwin 3 – The playoff-bound Falcons defeated visiting Baldwin in a non-section game to close their regular season with four straight wins.
Winning pitcher Mason Miller gave up one earned run on six hits with one walk and three strikeouts in five innings.
Connellsville (11-9) scored all its runs in a fourth inning that featured a lead-off triple by Matthew Firestone, an RBI single by Chase Sankovich, and a run-scoring double by Rocco Farrell. Anthony Piasecki and Geno Farrell also had RBIs in the frame which ended with the hosts ahead 5-1.
Piasecki also doubled for the Falcons.
Baldwin scored once in the fifth and once in the sixth in whittling the gap to two but could get no closer.
Grayden Gillott tossed a scoreless seventh inning to earn the save.
Losing pitcher Adam Degenhart went the distance for the Highlanders (1-19) who got two hits apiece from Gavin Sakely and Matthew Musial and a double from Jack Naret.
Mapletown 13, Turkeyfoot Valley 3 – Josh Mick was 3 for 4 with a triple and three RBIs as the Maples rolled past the visiting Rams in a five-inning non-section game.
Freshman Sam Moritz allowed just one hit with two walks and four strikeouts in four innings to earn the win for Mapletown (3-14).
Zach Ryan had two hits and two RBIs for Turkeyfoot (2-15) which also got a hit, RBI and run from Luke Bowers. Heath Nicholson took the loss.
High school softball
Frazier 3, Uniontown 1 – The Lady Commodores did all their scoring in the first inning on a two-run double by Jayanna Ciferno and an RBI single by Grace Polkabla in a non-section win over the host Lady Raiders.
Winning pitcher Addison Hiles gave up four hits and five walks with seven strikeouts as Frazier remained unbeaten at 13-0.
The lone run for Uniontown (8-6) came in on Graci Rodeheaver’s RBI single in the fifth inning. Emmaleigh Noah, who scored the run, was the losing pitcher. She allowed six hits and two walks with six strikeouts.
Waynesburg Central 7, Gateway 1 – Gina Tedrow fired a five-hitter with 19 strikeouts as the Lady Raiders toppled the host Lady Gators in a non-section game.
Avery Davis smacked a triple and scored two runs for Waynesburg (7-11) which also got a double and two RBIs from Aidan Snider.
Samantha Robi hit an RBI triple for Gateway (1-16).
Mapletown 6, Beth-Center 3 – Treslee Weston had a double and three RBIs in the Lady Maples’ non-section victory over the visiting Lady Bulldogs.
Winning pitcher Devan Clark struck out eight for Mapletown (5-10).
Kendall Welsh had two hits and an RBI for B-C (6-8).
South Park 11, Ringgold 0 – Sydney Mekely doubled, singled twice and knocked in two runs as the Lady Eagles cruised past the host Lady Rams in a non-section game.
Kylie Mettrick also had three hits with an RBI for South Park (16-1).
Dani Vecchio took the loss for Ringgold (2-14).
