Local roundup: Charleroi rides Celaschi no-hitter to first-round win
Sofia Celaschi threw a no-hitter and knocked in a pair of runs to help Charleroi stomp Greensburg Central Catholic, 11-1 in five innings, in a WPIAL Class AA softball playoff game at Norwin on Tuesday.
Celaschi walked four and struck out nine and helped her own cause with a run-scoring groundout and an RBI single as the Lady Cougars (14-4) advanced to Thursday’s quarterfinals against No. 3 Laurel which received a first-round bye. The site and time are to be determined.
Kaylee Sypolt hit a two-run single in a six-run third inning that turned a 4-0 Charleroi lead into an imposing 10-0 advantage.
Maddie Lancy added a double for the Lady Cougars who also got run-scoring singles from Lyla Brunner and Avery Pendo.
Jefferson-Morgan 10, Carlynton 0 – Emilee Bazzoli fired a one-hit shutout and smacked a run-scoring double as the eighth-seeded Lady Rockets romped over No. 9 Carlynton in a five-inning WPIAL Class A first-round playoff game at Peterswood Park.
Jefferson-Morgan extended its streak of seasons with at least one playoff win to five under coach Rich Rush.
Bazzoli walked two and struck out nine as J-M advanced to Thursday’s quarterfinals where it will meet No. 1 Union, which received a first-round bye, at a site and time to be determined.
The Lady Rockets (7-8) also got doubles from Addie Larkin and Addyson Teagarden.
South Side Beaver 13, Monessen 3 – Karis Dunham smacked a trio of doubles and knocked in five runs in the seventh-seeded Lady Rams’ WPIAL Class A first-round playoff win over No. 10 Monessen at Montour.
South Side advances to Thursday’s quarterfinals against No. 1 Carmichaels at a site and time to be determined.
Maya Riinghoff had three hits and two RBIs for South Side (13-4) which also got two hits apiece from Kenidi Cook and Halina Matijevich.
Grace Clingenpeel and Lillie Mackey each had a double and an RBI for the Lady Greyhounds (7-7) who also got a double from Joey Hurst.
Serra Catholic 11, Beth-Center 3 – Madisyn Zigarovich had two RBIs and was the winning pitcher as the fourth-seeded Lady Eagles knocked off No. 13 Beth-Center in a WPIAL Class AA first-round playoff game at Peterswood Park.
Catherine Clarke drove in three runs for Serra Catholic (12-4) which also got a pair of singles from Keyara Watkins.
Chloe Bryne singled twice and drove in three runs and Kaytlynn Signorini had two hits for the Lady Bulldogs (6-9) who also got doubles from Allison Lynch and Kendall Welsh.
Mohawk 8, Waynesburg Central 5 – The Lady Warriors rallied from a 5-3 deficit with five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat the Lady Raiders in a WPIAL Class AA first-round playoff game at Montour.
Mylie Pistorius and Lydia Cole each doubled in the game-winning rally. Reagan Magno earned the win in relief for No. 4 Mohawk (15-5).
Losing pitcher Gina Tedrow allowed eight runs, only three of which were earned, on seven hits with six walks and nine strikeouts, and had two hits, including a double, and an RBI. No. 13 Waynesburg ends its season with a 7-12 record.
Yough 2, McGuffey 1 – Adoria Waldier came on in relief to work out of a two-on, none-out jam in the seventh inning as the ninth-seeded Lady Cougars hung on to beat No. 8 McGuffey in a WPIAL Class AAA first-round playoff game at Norwin.
Yough advances to Thursday’s quarterfinals where it will face top-seeded Avonworth which defeated Hopewell.
Winning pitcher Kylee Fisher, who allowed one run and no walks with six strikeouts in six-plus innings, surrendered consecutive singles to start the seventh. Yough coach Dutch Harvey then called on Waldier who threw a wild pitch but then got a strikeout, a fielder’s choice out at home plate and a ground out to end the game and earn the save.
Katie Proctor hit an RBI double for the Lady Cougars (9-4) who also got doubles from Fisher and Payton Jenkins.
Faith Ealy and Maura Janovich both had two hits for the Lady Highlanders (10-5). Losing pitcher MaKenna Crothers, who drove in McGuffey’s only run, allowed one earned run on five hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.
Central Valley 6, Mount Pleasant 1 – Emma Weaver twirled a five-hitter and had two hits as the sixth-seeded Lady Warriors eliminated No. 11 Mount Pleasant in a WPIAL Class AAA first-round playoff game at West Mifflin.
Weaver struck out seven and walked just one for Central Valley (12-2) which got a triple from Abigale Stewart and two RBIs from Maddie Spirnak. Sonya Householder and Daelyn Dreher each added a run-scoring single and Nadia Ehle and Aubrey Grater contributed two hits apiece for the Lady Warriors.
The Lady Vikings (11-9) scored their only run in the sixth inning when Kendall Waters followed singles by Gracie Etling and Dani Trainer with a sacrifice fly.
High school baseball
Burrell 6, Mount Pleasant 2 – Stevie Hasson pitched six shutout innings and AJ McLafferty ripped a two-run triple in a four-run fourth inning to help the 14th-seeded Bucs upend No. 3 Mount Pleasant in a Class AAA first-round game at Gateway.
Hasson allowed just three hits as Burrell advanced to Monday’s quarterfinals against No. 11 Neshannock.
Isaac Lacinski also had two RBIs for the Bucs (12-8) who built a 6-0 lead.
The Vikings (13-5) didn’t get on the board until the bottom of the seventh when Cole Chatfield hit a two-run triple.
Jacob Kitts took the loss for Section 4-AAA champion Mount Pleasant
Laurel 7, Charleroi 2 – Will Zwolenik’s two-run single keyed a six-run fifth inning as the eighth-seeded Spartans (11-8) rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat the No. 9 Cougars in a WPIAL Class AA first-round playoff game at Burkett Field.
Winning pitcher Hunter Kobialka pitched a six-hitter with three walks and six strikeouts.
Losing pitcher Kaden Woods and Jackson Keranko each knocked in a run for Charleroi (10-8)
Woods gave up seven runs, only one of which was earned, on four hits with four walks and five strikeouts in 4 â…” innings.
Riverview 2, Beth-Center 0 – Winning pitcher Jack Loughren pitched 6 â…“ scoreless innings as the Raiders edged the Bulldogs in a WPIAL Class AA first-round playoff game at Gateway.
Loughren gave up just two hits and struck out nine for seventh-seeded Riverview (13-6) who got two hits, including a double, and an RBI from Johnny Bertucci.
Santino Revi smacked a double for Beth-Center (9-10).
