Heading to states: EFĢƵ Didjunas ties for second in WPIAL Class AA final
SEWICKLEY – Elizabeth ForwardĢƵ Aaron Didjunas wasn’t able to maintain his hot start, but was able to play solid on the back nine at Sewickley Academy Wednesday for a share of second place in the WPIAL Class AA Individual Golf Championship final round.
Didjunas fired a 1-over 73 for a two-round total of 6-over 153. Didjunas shared second place with Sewickley AcademyĢƵ Severin Harmon.
McGuffeyĢƵ Logan Crowe shot 3-over 75 in the final round to win the gold medal with a two-round score of 4-over 148.
“I started off hot with par-eagle-birdie,” said Didjunas. “I tried to keep it hot but towards the end of the front nine I got on the bogey train.
“On the back nine I salvaged (the bad finish on the front) with a birdie. I got pars from then on out.”
Didjunas said he left a few shots out there.
“I had a lot of lip-outs. I left three or four putts out there, for sure,” said Didjunas, adding, “I had three 3-putts.”
Didjunas, who was fourth in Class AAA last year, wasn’t worried about the field.
“I had to beat the course. I had to get red numbers and beat the course,” said Didjunas.
Charleroi freshman Levi Large slipped into the top 18 and a berth in the state tournament after shooting 9-over 81 for a two-round total of 161.
“Not too much,” Large said when asked if he was nervous, adding, “I was more excited than nervous.”
Large didn’t get caught up in the moment and simply played shot to shot.
“The first two holes I hit it decent. I struggled when I crossed the road,” said Large. “I just always kept it in front of me and play the best I could.”
Large said he sneaked peek at the leaderboard at the turn.
“I looked once on hole nine,” said Large.
Large was just looking to play one more round this season.
“It was pretty important to get as far as I can this season,” added Large.
Jefferson-Morgan sophomore Urijah Teasdale entered the final round after shooting 81 in the first round. He shot 10-over 82 in the second round for a two-day total of 163, missing the cut by one stroke in 20th place.
“I had just one bad hole, No. 6. I made a nine,” said Teasdale. “I rolled my drive about 30 yards. I hit a decent second shot, but it hit the cart path and bounced into the weeds.”
Teasdale played solid over the final 15 holes at 4-over.
“I left a lot of shots out there,” said Teasdale, adding, “I just wanted to get past (this round).”
Elizabeth ForwardĢƵ Luke Boyer was in the hunt for a top-18 finish, but faltered down the stretch and shot 84 for a two-round total of 20-over 164 for a tie in 21st place. Teammate Julien Hredocik was 31st with a final score of 26-over 170.
Mount Pleasant teammates Aydan Gross and Ryan Karfelt also missed the cut. Gross finished tied in 32nd place with a two-round total of 171 (87-84) and Karfelt shot 166 (85-81) for 24th place.
