Rocket wrestlers edge Bearcats in section battle

Jefferson-Morgan outlasted Bentworth in a 39-32 victory on Wednesday night in Section 3-2A boys wrestling action at Bentworth High School.

The Rockets’ E.J. Lingenfield (152), Geno Orlandi (160), Landon Heath (285) and Caleb Dulaney (114) won by fall.

Jefferson-Morgan’s Payton Bastian edged Paxton Thomas, 5-4, at 189 pounds in a tossup match.

The Rockets’ Austin Grandel (107) and Connor Pinchok (133) won by forfeit.

Jefferson-Morgan improved to 1-0 in the section and 8-0 overall.

Brownsville 46, Frazier 12 — The Falcons earned their first section victory in over 20 years in defeating the Commodores at Brownsville Area High School in Section 3-2A action.

Brownsville recently brought its program back and is making progress each year. The Falcons moved to 1-1 in the section and 3-1 overall.

Thomas Jefferson 50, Belle Vernon 22 — The Jaguars earned four victories by technical fall in a Section 7-3A victory over the Leopards at Thomas Jefferson High School.

Belle Vernon’s defending state champion and Penn State commit Elijah Brown won by fall in 1:27 at 215 pounds.

The Leopards’ Colby Hibner (160) recorded a pin in 1:26. Teammate Brayden Broadwater won by fall in 5:04 at 114.

Belle Vernon’s Gracin Guglielmo won by major decision, 15-3, at 107.

The Leopards fell to 1-1 in the section and 3-4 overall.

Thomas Jefferson improved to 2-0 in section action and 9-2.

McGuffey 60, Waynesburg Central 15 — The Highlanders won six of the eight bouts that were contested in a non-section victory at Waynesburg Central High School.

The Raiders’ Roan Tustin won by fall in 3:00 at 215 pounds. Teammate Ky-Mani Sumpter earned a 6-3 decision at 189.

Lincoln Fisher received a forfeit at 285.

McGuffey’s Clayton (127) and Lane Ealy (133), Josh Barr (139), Michael Cosato (145), Victor Bonus (152) and Kash Main (172) won by fall.

Waynesburg dropped to 2-6 while the Highlanders remain undefeated at 8-0.

Hempfield 51, Mount Pleasant 24 — The Vikings’ Tristan Wtorkiewicz, Juan Jusino and Payton Schaum won by fall, but the Spartans took advantage of receiving five forfeits to Mount Pleasant’s one to earn a non-section win at Hempfield Area High School.

Wtorkiewicz won by fall at 152 before Jusino planked his opponent at 172. Schaum’s pin came in the 285-pound weight class.

The Vikings’ James Ritenour received a forfeit at 114.

Mount Pleasant fell to 4-7 and Hempfield improved to 4-2.

Girls basketball

Geibel Catholic 62, Bishop Canevin 29 — The Lady Gators took control early in a Section 2-1A victory over the Lady Crusaders at Bishop Canevin.

Geibel remains undefeated at 3-0 in the section and 8-0 overall.

The Lady Gators had a 17-7 lead after the first quarter and a 34-15 halftime advantage. Geibel had a 16-8 edge in the third period and a 12-6 advantage in the fourth.

Sophomore Mallory Clemmer led the Lady Gators in scoring with 27 points. Teammate Alexa Morgan had 16 and Emma Larkin put in 13.

Isabella Sysak led the Lady Crusaders (1-2, 2-4) in scoring with 10 points. Kya Cooley added nine for the home team.

Boys basketball

Chartiers-Houston 56, Waynesburg Central 53 — The Buccaneers rallied in the second half for a non-section triumph at Chartiers-Houston.

The Raiders (2-4) trailed by one after the first quarter, but used a 13-7 advantage in the second period for a 28-23 halftime edge.

The Buccaneers (5-2) outscored the visitors by eight in the second half.

Waynesburg’s Dane Woods had a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Teammate Jackson Dean had 11 points and eight rebounds. Austin Surber was also in double figures with 11.

The Raiders’ Cole Headlee had seven assists.
