Lion hurls two-hit shutout in Uniontown Legion victory
Noah Lion pitched a two-hit shutout in Uniontown’s 7-0 victory over Charleroi on Tuesday night in the Fayette American Legion league playoffs at Hutchinson Field in Hopwood.
Lion allowed two singles with four strikeouts and no walks over seven innings to earn the win on the mound. He threw 93 pitches (58 strikes).
Uniontown (14-8-1) took the only lead it would need in the bottom of the second inning when Sevi Vecchiolla walked and advanced to second on Nick Fleszar’s sacrifice bunt. Connor D’Amico walked and Vecchiolla scored when Brayden Hinzy reached on an error for a 1-0 lead.
The home team extended its advantage to 3-0 in the third when Eahn Stevenson singled and advanced to second on an error before scoring when Lion reached on an error. Courtesy runner Barrett Shuba crossed home plate on an error after Vecchiolla grounded out to third base.
Uniontown pushed its lead to seven with four runs in the sixth inning.
Jack Johns singled to center field with one out and Luke Gresh reached on an error before Johns scored on Shane Kelly’s double to center field for a 4-0 advantage.
Gresh scored on a wild pitch and Kelly raced home on Stevenson’s base hit to center field for a 6-0 lead before Shuba scored on Vecchiolla’s sacrifice fly to left field for a 7-0 advantage.
Uniontown played at Connellsville on Wednesday night in the championship game for the league playoffs. The result was not available at press time, but if Uniontown won, it would have to play Connellsville again for the title, as Connellsville didn’t have a loss entering the game.
The Region 6 tournament is scheduled to begin July 18 at John DiVirgilio Sports Complex in Rostraver Township.
Belle Vernon, Connellsville and Uniontown will represent the Fayette County League.
Fayette County Baseball League
Carmichaels 4, PV Mudcats 3 — Luke Camden’s single to left field scored A.J. Vanata in a walk-off win for the Copperheads at Carmichaels Area Junior/Senior High School.
The game was tied at three after seven innings, but Carmichaels made sure it sent its fans home happy.
The Copperheads improved to 10-1, while the Mudcats (12-1) lost their first game of the season. Carmichaels avenged its 3-2 loss to the Mudcats on June 22.
Vanata drew a walk to lead off the eighth before Alex VanSickle and Dom Obiecunas singled to load the bases with nobody out.
PV pitcher Noah Broadwater forced the next batter to pop up to second and the following to strikeout before Camden came through on a 3-2 count.
The Mudcats opened the scoring in the first inning when Landon McAlpine scored on Joey Charlton’s double to center field for a 1-0 lead. The visitors added a second run in the third when Broadwater doubled and touched home plate on McAlpine’s base hit to left field.
The Copperheads tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth when Obiecunas and Noah Mildren hit back-to-back home runs to right field with two outs.
PV regained the lead in the fifth when Broadwater walked and scored on McAlpine’s double to left field for a 3-2 game.
Carmichaels scratched across a run in the sixth when Vanata walked, stole second and raced home on Mildren’s base hit.
Gianni Cantini earned the pitching victory after relieving Gavin Pratt in the seventh. Cantini threw two scoreless and hitless frames with two strikeouts and one walk. Pratt yielded three earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts and four walks.
Hunter Hamilton doubled for the Copperheads.
Charleroi 3, Mill Run 1 — Colton Brightwell doubled and scored an insurance run while pitching seven quality innings to help lead Charleroi to a victory over Mill Run at Wharton Township Recreational Park in Farmington.
Brightwell allowed one earned run on three hits with four strikeouts and three walks in earning the victory on the mound. He doubled and scored when Chad Behrendt hit into a fielder’s choice for the Magicians’ third run.
Ashton Ray and Dan Verscharen also doubled for Charleroi (7-4). Behrendt and Verscharen had two hits apiece for the visitors.
Ray’s double produced two runs in the fourth inning.
Matthew Miller scored on Grayden Gillott’s single to center field in the fifth frame to cut the Millers’ deficit to 2-1.
Kole Koontz took the loss, but pitched a solid seven innings. He allowed three earned runs on nine hits with four strikeouts and one walk.
Mill Run fell to 5-8 this season.
Youghiogheny 11, Brownsville 0 — James Showman pitched a one-hit shutout in Youghiogheny’s victory over Brownsville at Redstone Field in Republic.
He had four strikeouts and one walk over five innings to earn the victory. The game ended after the fifth due to the 10-run rule.
Youghiogheny (4-8) scored three runs in the first inning, two each in the second and third frames, and exploded for sixth in the fourth inning.
Dom Koch and Grayson Willis doubled for the visitors.
Donovan Von Frandenburg doubled for Brownsville.
Conner Burkey had two singles. Shane Evans and Gavin Roebuck knocked in two runs apiece.
