Four-run 5th keys Charleroi victory in FCBL action

Charleroi used a four-run fifth inning to distance itself in a 9-4 victory over Youghiogheny in Fayette County Baseball League play on Tuesday night at Charleroi Veterans Memorial Field.

The Magicians (6-2) held a 5-3 lead before putting up its four-spot. Youghiogheny (3-4) added a run in the top of the seventh inning.

Starting and winning pitcher Ashton Ray led off the fifth with a double to center field, and with one out, scored on an error for a 6-3 advantage.

Colton Brightwall walked and Chad Behrendt scored on Tyler Sankovich’s base hit to right field.

Behrendt and Sankovich crossed home plate on Remington Lessman’s triple to right field for a 9-3 lead.

Youghiogheny cut the deficit to 9-4 when Conner Burkey scored on Dom Koch’s double. Burkey had two doubles and Koch three hits.

Youghiogheny took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first frame before Charleroi added a run in the bottom of the inning. The Magicians scored one in the second and three in the third for a 5-1 advantage.

Jimmy Lanzi doubled for the home team. Lessman drove in three runs, while Brightwall and Sankovich drove in two apiece. Brightwall had two hits.

Ray allowed three earned runs on five hits over five innings. He had four strikeouts and four walks. Dan Verschan yielded one earned run on two hits over the last two frames. He struck out two and walked one.

Carmichaels 12, Brownsville 0 — The Copperheads’ trio of Matt Bamford, Drake Long and Robbie Wilson-Jones combined for a six-hit shutout in FCBL action at Redstone Field.

Bamford set the tone for Carmichaels by allowing four hits over five innings. He had 12 strikeouts and walked two in earning the victory. Long pitched a one-hit sixth and Wilson-Jones a one-hit seventh to close the game out. Long had one strikeout and one walk, and Wilson-Jones had one strikeout and no walks.

The Copperheads scored the only run they would need in the top of the first inning when Alex VanSickle doubled to right field and scored on Andino Vecchiolla’s base hit to center field for a 1-0 lead.

Carmichaels added another run in the second before scoring four in the fifth, and three apiece in the sixth and seventh frames.

Vecchiolla hit a three-run inside-the-park home run that scored VanSickle and Gavin Pratt in the sixth inning. VanSickle had a two-run double in the seventh before scoring on Pratt’s single to center field. VanSickle had a game-high three hits.

AJ Vanata had a run-scoring double in the fifth inning.

Wyatt Nehls doubled for Brownsville. Teammate Gene Thorpe had two singles.
