Ali Watson scored off a corner kick in the second half and Belle Vernon earned a 1-0 victory over McGuffey in Section 1-2A girls soccer play Wednesday evening at McGuffey High School in Claysville.

Courtney Martin sent in the corner that Watson buried into the goal for all the scoring the Lady Leopards would need.

Belle Vernon improved to 7-2-1 in the section and 9-4-1 overall. The Lady Leopards have already clinched a spot in the WPIAL playoffs and are mathematically alive to catch South Park (9-0-0, 14-0-0) for the section championship, but would need to win out and have the Lady Eagles lose their remaining three section matches.

Belle Vernon can clinch second place in the section if it defeats Keystone Oaks (6-3-0, 7-7-0) on Monday at James Weir Stadium. The Lady Leopards won the first match against the Lady Eagles, 1-0, on Sept. 10.

“We were finding it hard to get to the net because McGuffey packed it in on us,” Belle Vernon coach Tracy Lovett said. “It was difficult to get good looks due to all the congestion in front of the net. We were able to find the back of the net off an excellent corner kick from Courtney Martin that was converted by freshman Ali Watson.”

Belle Vernon maintained possession for the majority of the match, which limited the Lady Highlanders (3-6-0, 4-7-0) to one shot on target.

The Lady Leopards’ Rory Bastedo and Skylar Salay combined for the clean sheet.

“The whole team played well and we dominated the game and held possession for the whole game,” Lovett said. “They only had one shot.”

South Fayette 11, Laurel Highlands 1 — The Lady Lions entered their Section 3-3A match against the Lady Mustangs having just one goal in league play.

Laurel Highlands’ Ava Ruvalcaba made it two goals for South Fayette’s section opponents when she sent a 38-yard free kick through the Lady Lions’ defensive wall and to the left of senior keeper and Miami (Ohio) commit Cailtyn Thompson at 23:36 of the second half.

Unfortunately for Ruvalcaba and the Lady Mustangs, it was the only goal they scored in a setback to the two-time defending WPIAL Class 3A champions at Mustang Field.

Laurel Highlands (3-5-0, 5-6-1) can clinch a spot in the WPIAL playoffs with a victory over Albert Gallatin (2-6-0, 2-9-0) on Monday at Albert Gallatin. The Lady Mustangs won the first meeting, 5-1, on Sept. 15.

South Fayette (8-0-0, 11-1-1) can clinch the section title on Monday with a win over second-place Thomas Jefferson (7-1-0, 9-6-0). The Lady Lions defeated the Lady Jaguars, 5-0, on Sept. 15.

South Fayette showed why it is the two-time defending WPIAL champions in taking a 4-0 lead before the 20-minute mark of the first half on goals by Quinn Miller (36:36), Gabby Beinecke (29:00), Mia Deramo (24:20) and Harper Zapf (23:20).

Silvi Rossi had assists on Beinecke and Deramo’s tallies. Deramo finished the half with an unassisted tally at 1:13 for a 5-0 advantage at the break.

Lily Chiappetta scored on a rebound after Laurel Highlands keeper Addison Stroko made a kick save for a six-goal lead before Rossi scored at 30:15 of the second half.

Following Ruvalcaba’s tally, Lyla Tarin scored for the visitor and Deramo recorded the hat trick with 15:58 remaining for a 9-0 advantage.

Alexa Deutschendorf and Zapf scored the final two goals.

The Lady Lions put 25 shots on target to the Lady Mustangs’ two. Stroko made 14 saves and Thompson stopped one shot.

Camryn McClean and Brooklyn Lecorchick had shots go just wide of the target in the first half for the home team. Laurel Highlands’ Ella Doman had two runs where she was tackled but no call was made, much to the dismay of the Lady Mustang faithful, although Ruvalcaba’s free kick came as the result of a foul that was called on South Fayette. Molly Nairn held down the backline for Laurel Highlands.

The Lady Lions had an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Mount Pleasant 10, East Allegheny 0 — The Lady Vikings clinched the Section 4-2A championship with a shutout at East Allegheny.

Mount Pleasant (8-0-0, 11-3-1) can finish no lower than a tie for second place with Deer Lakes (6-2-0, 11-2-0). Even if the Lady Lancers won out and the Lady Vikings lost their last two section matches, Mount Pleasant would have the edge due to sweeping the season series.

Morgan Gesinski and Jaden Kantorik recorded hat tricks that led to six Lady Viking goals. Izzy Overly, Camryn Kapr, Lexi Baker and Samantha Hodge also found the back of the net for the visitors, who had a 10-0 halftime lead.

Laurel Rummel earned the clean sheet.

Bentworth 2, Brownsville 0 — Brielle Dillon scored both goals and Julia Brandau earned the clean sheet as the Lady Bearcats clinched back-to-back Section 2-1A championships in a victory over the Lady Falcons at Bentworth.

Bentworth won its fifth section title in the last 10 years, and sixth in the past 15. The Lady Bearcats improved to 8-0-0 in section play and 12-1-1 overall.

Brownsville dropped to 4-3-1 in the section and 8-4-1 overall. The Lady Falcons are in a tie for third place in the section with Waynesburg Central. The two play Monday at Redstone Field in Republic. Brownsville won the first match in overtime, 4-3, on Sept. 15.

Dillon scored one goal in each half, and Julia Brandau earned the shutout.

“We didn’t play our sharpest tonight, but to beat a playoff opponent, 2-0, when you aren’t at your best is a sign of character of the group,” Bentworth coach Tyler Hamstra said. “This is an amazing group of young ladies. To win the second title in a back-to-back is never easy because you get everyone’s best game every night. Brina Orsatti put in a captain’s performance tonight. She was very spirited.”

Uniontown 5, Carrick 4 — Logan Davis scored two goals and Uniontown held on for a victory over Carrick in non-section play at Bill Power Stadium.

Noah Holland opened the scoring for the Red Raiders (5-10) before Davis’ brace. Braylon Woods and Lucas Cooper also found the back of the net.
