Waynesburg tops Brownsville, clinches section title

Ani Cree chalked up 20 kills, 15 digs and two assists as undefeated Waynesburg Central clinched at least a share of the Section 3-2A championship with a 3-1 victory over visiting Brownsville in girls volleyball action Thursday night.

The Lady Raiders won by scores of 25-17, 25-17, 23-25 and 25-15.

Chatham Knight had 21 assists, five aces, two kills and two digs and Railey Bochna contributed 12 kills and eight digs for Waynesburg (12-0, 15-0), which also got 11 digs, three assists and three aces from Lelia McCollum, 13 assists, five digs and two kills from Gina Tedrow, six kills and five digs from Harper Grimes and four kills and nine digs from Emily Rafferty.

Skyler Gates led the second-place Lady Falcons (10-2, 13-2) with 17 kills and eight blocks, AiJanae Foster totaled nine kills and two blocks and Ashley Evanchak had 20 digs. Brownsville also got five blocks and eight digs from Abigayle Thomas and nine service points from Lena Rechichar.

Laurel Highlands 3, Uniontown 1 — The playoff-bound Mustangs lost the first set, but rebounded to their cross-town rivals in a Section 3-3A match at A.J. Everhart Memorial Gymnasium.

The Lady Red Raiders (3-7, 8-7) won the first set, 26-24, but Laurel Highlands (8-2, 9-5) won the next three by scores of 25-18, 25-21 and 25-22.

The Mustangs’ Sara Reed had 37 assists, 18 digs, four kills and three aces. Teammate Diondra Brown had a team-high 17 kills and 15 blocks. She added 21 digs and four aces.

Esher Waqanivalu led the visitors in digs with 24. She had four assists and two blocks and kills apiece. LH’s Addie Ciez had 13 digs, nine kills, three blocks, two assists and one ace.

Harlie Dirda saved points with the Mustangs with 20 digs. She added eight kills, three aces and two blocks. Teammate Kayla Howell had 15 digs and one ace.

Brinley Duncan added three blocks, two kills and a dig for LH.

Mapletown 3, West Greene 2 — Rowan Eisiminger had 16 kills and 12 digs as the host Lady Maples upset the second-place Lady Pioneers (5-3, 5-4) in a close, back-and-forth Section 3-A battle.

Mapletown won by scores of 25-19, 12-25, 28-18, 15-25 and 15-13.

Treslee Weston had 14 kills, six digs, three assists and two aces and Marley Shiflett totaled 25 assists, four kills and four digs for the Lady Maples (3-5, 5-9), which also got three kills, three digs and three aces from Sophia Vanata.

Elizabeth Forward 3, Albert Gallatin 2 — Gabby Penrose had nine kills and seven digs and Mia Giachetti had nine kills and six digs but the host Lady Colonials fell to the Lady Warriors (2-8, 2-12) in a tight Section 3-3A clash.

EF won by scores of 25-20, 19-25, 25-15, 22-25 and 17-15.

Ellie Seese totaled six kills, five digs and two aces, Mikayla Shea contributed five kills and seven digs and Riylee Abel had nine assists, nine digs and three aces for Albert Gallatin (0-11, 1-13) which also got eight assists, three digs and two aces from Paityn Goletz, five kills from Isabelle Usher, 10 digs from Lily Mack, eight digs apiece from Gabby DeLorenzo and Kylee Augustine and four digs from Danica Sterbutzel.

Belle Vernon 3, California 2 — Aubrey Brown had 19 kills and Mallory Wasicek added seven kills and three service aces as the Lady Leopards held off the visiting Lady Trojans (12-4) in a non-section match.

Belle Vernon (13-3) won by scores of 25-11, 27-25, 23-25, 16-25 and 15-6.

Lyla Teets had eight kills and Mia Roebuck chipped in with seven kills for the Lady Leopards, who also got 21 assists from Abby Nickolls and 27 digs from Jay Johnson.

Hempfield 3, Connellsville 0 — Ella Berkebile had 10 kills and Preslee Horchak had 29 assists as the Lady Spartans (7-1, 10-3) swept the host Lady Falcons (0-8, 1-12) in a Section 3-4A match.

Football

Meyersdale 54, Brownsville 0 — Caleb Sines and Caleb Snyder each scored two touchdowns and Lance Jones tossed a pair of TD passes as the Red Raiders triumphed over the visiting Falcons in a non-conference game.

Sines scored on runs of 12 and 26 yards and Snyder scored on runs of 5 and 28 yards. Jones threw touchdown passes of 35 yards to Gavan Steinberg and 4 yards to Matt Hainsworth.

Meyersdale (7-1) also got touchdown runs of 12 yards from Spencer Whitfield and 4 yards from Mason Baer.

The Red Raiders led 28-0 after the first quarter and 48-0 at halftime.

Austin Pascarelli completed 12 of 20 passes for 79 yards and ran six times for 39 yards for Brownsville (0-6). Exzavier Vargas had 11 carries for 34 yards and 41 receiving yards and Jaiden Praster had six receptions.

Boys soccer

Beth-Center 10, Greensburg Central Catholic 2 — Nekoda Bundy scored five goals and Parker Amos added three more as the host Bulldogs romped over the Centurions (2-6, 2-10) in a Section 2-A match.

Beth-Center (5-2, 9-6) also got goals from Hunter Bobbs and Acie Lawrence.

Bethel Park 2, Laurel Highlands 1 — Youssef Benrabia knocked in the go-ahead goal with less than two minutes remaining as the first-place Black Hawks withstood an upset bid by the visiting Mustangs in a Section 2-3A battle.

Josh Pantin had the first goal for Bethel Park (11-0-2, 11-1-3).

Cole Radcliffe scored the lone goal for Laurel Highlands (6-7, 10-7) with an assist from Elliot Boor.

Chartiers-Houston 12, California 0 — Ashton Kennedy and Josh Hawkins each scored three goals as the Buccaneers (4-4, 8-7) beat the host Trojans (0-7, 0-8) in a Section 2-A match.

Mt. Lebanon 8, Connellsville 2 — Grayson Stuart scored two goals as the Blue Devils (6-3-1, 11-4-2) knocked off the Falcons (0-10, 2-14-1) in a Section 2-4A match.

Mount Pleasant 3, Southmoreland 1 — Gavin Rummel put in two goals in the visiting Vikings’ Section 4-2A win over the Scotties (7-6, 8-9).

Tyke Snyder added a goal on a penalty kick and an assist for Mount Pleasant (12-1, 13-4). Goalkeeper Grayson Gardner made four saves.

Yough 6, Waynesburg Central 5 — Isaac Pacacha scored three goals and Noah Jurcevich had two as the Cougars (10-3, 11-4) edged the host Raiders (4-8-1, 4-9-1) in a Section 4-2A match.

Girls soccer

Chartiers Valley 2, Waynesburg Central 1 — The Lady Colts (5-9-2) beat the host Lady Raiders (8-3-2) in a non-section match.

Hockey

Connellsville 9, Elizabeth Forward 1 – Nolan Wojnar recorded a hat trick along with an assist as the Falcons routed the Warriors (0-2) in a Division 2 game at CFS Bank Arena.

Connellsville (2-0) also got two goals from Sam Denny and a goal and an assist apiece from Mason Mazak and Liam King.

The Falcons peppered Elizabeth Forward goalie Andrew Weir with 47 shots, while Connellsville goalie Nick Daniels-Nimick only faced 17 shots.

Denny opened the scoring 21 seconds into the game on an even-strength tally. Wojnar and Will Whittaker had the assists.

Wojnar’s first goal was unassisted and at even-strength at 3:29 of the first period.

Larry Barrofio (Connor Basinger assist) and Logan Hause (unassisted) extended the Falcons’ lead to 4-0 at 14:08 of the opening period.

Wojnar scored two goals within 14 seconds of each other for the hat trick at 2:55 of the second period. His second tally was unassisted and King assisted on the third, as Connellsville built up a 6-0 lead.

Mazak set-up Denny for the Falcons’ seventh goal at 6:41 of the second before King scored after receiving a pass from defenseman Logan Jenkins at 10:21 of the middle period.

Mazak scored the Falcons’ final goal at 12:34 of the second for a 9-0 advantage.

Joe Jennings helped Elizabeth Forward avoid the shutout at 15:34 of the third after receiving a pass from Brock Stephenson.

Girls tennis

Quaker Valley 4, Mount Pleasant 1 – The Lady Quakers defeated the Lady Vikings in a Class 2A semifinals match.

Autumn Jurkovic-Kuzma prevented the shutout for Mount Pleasant by winning a three-set match at No. 3 singles.

Girls golf

WPIAL Class 2A Team Championships — Southmoreland recorded a score of 440 in the four-team event won by North Catholic (377) which advanced to the PIAA tournament.
