Belle VernonÄ¢¹½ÊÓƵ Dusi earns top seed in Class 2A tourney
Despite being denied a third-straight section singles championship, Belle Vernon senior Gabby Dusi was awarded the No. 1 seed for the WPIAL Class 2A Girls Tennis Singles Championships that are scheduled to begin this morning at North Allegheny High School.
Today’s action is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. and will continue through the semifinals. The championship and consolation final matches are set for Thursday at 1 p.m. at North Allegheny. The top three placewinners will qualify for the PIAA tournament.
Dusi, a Duquesne University commit, will be seeking her third-straight District 7 championship. Dusi was second in the state last year, and won the first tennis singles championship in school history two years ago.
Dusi will receive a bye in the first round before facing the winner of Neshannock’s Madalyn Arrow and Burrell’s Ava Radvansky in the quarterfinals.
Dusi lost in the Section 2-2A final last week to Oakland Catholic’s Mollie Sclichter, who is the third seed. Dusi defeated Sclichter, 7-5, in the first set, but was forced to a medical withdrawal and Sclichter won the title.
Dusi won her first two matches in the section tournament by scores of 10-0 before a 6-0, 6-1 triumph in the semifinals.
Mount Pleasant senior Bella Fullman earned the seventh seed after winning the Section 1-2A championship.
Fullman faces North Catholic’s Macaria Stall in the first round.
In the section tournament, Fullman won her first round (10-0) and quarterfinal (10-2) matches in dominant fashion before a 6-2, 6-0 over Burrell’s Jenna Morrison to reach the final, where she recorded a 6-2, 6-3 triumph in straight sets over Radvansky.
