Belle VernonÄ¢¹½ÊÓƵ Jack Edwards hits a chip shot onto the green during the Fayette County Coaches Association (FCCA) golf championship on Friday at Duck Hollow Golf Club. Edwards finished in a four-way tie for fifth place in the first round of the WPIAL Boys’ Individual Golf Championship in Class 3A on Monday at Willowbrook Country Club in Apollo.

Belle Vernon’s Jack Edwards shot a 2-under par on the back nine to finish at even-par in the first round of the WPIAL Boys’ Individual Golf Championships in Class 3A on Monday at Willowbrook Country Club in Apollo.

Edwards, a senior, sits in a four-way tie for fifth place with Indiana’s Austin Schawl, Bethel Park’s Joey Boff and Kiski Area’s Max Mottura.

The Fox Chapel duo of Carson Kittsley (-6) and Baron Bitar (-4) are atop the leaderboard in first and second, while Latrobe’s Jack Sacriponte (-2) and West Allegheny’s Nico Ward (-2) are tied for third.

Edwards, and the top 36 finishers from the first round, including ties, advanced to the final round of the tournament that will be contested next Monday at Butler Country Club in Butler. All scores from the first round will carry over.

Edwards birdied the first three holes before a bogey on the par-four fourth hole put him at 1 over. A bogey on the par-3 seventh had Edwards at 2-over par entering the back nine.

Edwards recorded birdies on the par-4 10th hole and par-3 12th hole to reach even-par. He closed his round with six-straight pars.

Teammate Jordan Mocello sunk four birdies, but three bogeys, two double bogeys and a nine prevented the senior from advancing to the final round, as Mocello was 7-over par with an 80.

Mocello’s season is not done, as he and the Leopards will compete in the team playoffs that begin Oct. 7.

The local contingent of Geibel Catholic’s Seth Dolan and John Hess, Southmoreland’s Brody Charnesky and Waynesburg Central’s Jarett Trentinik were unable to advance to the final round in Class 2A after they completed 18 holes at Hillcrest Country Club in Lower Burrell.
