Jonathan Guth | ĢƵ Laurel Highlands assistant coach Kayla Swaney watches the action during a match against Uniontown last season at Mustang Field. Swaney and several members of the team have been volunteering at the YMCA.

Kayla Swaney beamed with pride last season when the Laurel Highlands girls soccer team made the playoffs.

The Lady Mustangs’ assistant coach was happy with the teamĢƵ success on the field, but when she was approached by several members of the team to help out in the community, Swaney couldn’t remove her smile.

Swaney immediately thought of the YMCA when the inquiry came her way.

“A handful of the girls in the past have mentioned wanting to become involved in the community, and my mind instantly went to the Y, as it has always provided so much to our community,” Swaney said. “As a coach, your job doesn’t end when you step off the field. I want our girls to see the importance of stepping up, helping out and giving back. I’m so impressed with these girls, who have shown up bright and early on a Saturday, and without complaint.”

Swaney played for Laurel Highlands, and during her high school career and beyond, she has been a member of the YMCA.

“The YMCA has always been a great facility for our community,” Swaney said. “ItĢƵ a place where you can work out on your own, take group classes, learn the foundation and fundamentals of sports and itĢƵ always been a safe haven for the youth around Fayette County.”

The players have been assisting with cleaning the facilities inside and outside the YMCA, and Swaney has been scheduling each month to continue to assist.

Swaney met with YMCA President/CEO Casey Leone and expressed the Lady Mustangs’ desire to do whatever was needed.

There is a possibility of Laurel Highlands assisting with a youth soccer training camp where the team works with the instructors at the YMCA.

“Casey Leone, Matt Butina and the rest of the staff at the Y have been awesome to part with, and we truly look forward to continuing our work together,” Swaney said.
