Patnesky eager to coach Team Pennsylvania

Bobby Patnesky is eager to coach young up-and-coming wrestlers, and also provide an opportunity to sell Waynesburg University.

The second-year head coach for the Yellow Jackets was named to the coaching staff for the Pennsylvania Junior Men’s Freestyle Team at the 2026 U.S. Marine Corps Junior Nationals at the Fargodome in Fargo, N.D.

The Canon-McMillan graduate who continued his wrestling career at West Virginia University prior to entering the coaching ranks, will open training with the team from July 5-7 at PennWest Clarion before competition starts on July 9 at the Fargodome.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to give back to an organization that played a significant role in shaping my freestyle wrestling career through the PAWF (Pennsylvania Wrestling Federation),” said Patnesky in a news release that was provided by Waynesburg University’s sports information department. “Wrestling in Pennsylvania provided me with countless opportunities, mentors and experiences, and I look forward to helping the next generation of athletes pursue their dreams of bringing home the STOPSIGN.”

Patnesky, who won a WPIAL championship for the Big Macs, earned All-American status three times at Junior Nationals where he was also a finalist before qualifying for the NCAA Division I tournament three times and winning over 100 matches for the Mountaineers, including the Eastern Wrestling League title at 133 pounds as a senior, plans on using his newest gig to promote the men’s wrestling program at Waynesburg University.

“This experience will not only enhance our recruiting efforts, but also continue to elevate the profile of Waynesburg University wrestling,” Patnesky said. “Most importantly, I am excited to work with some of Pennsylvania’s best young wrestlers and help them pursue their goal of becoming national champions.

Patnesky coached Division I Davidson for 12 years prior to five seasons at Penn State Behrend. He brought the program back to respectability at Penn State Behrend by his second season. He also taught kinesiology at Behrend.

Patnesky was inducted into the Washington-Greene County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 2015. He earned a bachelor’s degree in communications from WVU in 2000 and a master’s in athletic administration from Ohio in 2003.
