Lady Red Raiders rally for road victory

Uniontown rallied from a five-run deficit to edge Ligonier Valley, 7-6, on Thursday in non-section softball play at Ligonier Valley.

The Lady Red Raiders trailed 5-0 after two innings, but scored two runs apiece in the third and fourth innings, one in the sixth and two in the seventh before holding off the Lady Rams in their final at-bat.

Juliet White hit her second home run of the season when she went deep to centerfield to score the winning runs. Katie White, who reached on an error, scored for a 7-5 lead for the visitors.

Ligonier Valley (0-1) had runners on first and third with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Emmaleigh Noah was able to close the game out with a strikeout.

Noah, who won the contest in relief, allowed one earned run on five hits over five innings. She struck out six and walked two.

The Lady Rams scored two runs in the first inning and three in the second for a 5-0 advantage. Errors played a role, as Uniontown made three in the game, and four of Ligonier’s six runs were unearned.

The Lady Red Raiders (2-0) scored their two runs in the third on two hits, and benefited from an error committed by the Lady Rams to cut the deficit to 5-2.

Sincere Dunlap singled with one out, Noah was hit-by-pitch and both came around to score when Katie White hit a line drive to left field. White was credited with an RBI when Dunlap touched home plate, but Noah’s run was unearned due to an error by Ligonier Valley.

Dunlap struck again in the third with a double to center field that scored Alivia Noah that cut the home team’s lead to one.

Lauren White walked to lead off the frame and advanced to third on Alivia Noah’s base hit to left field. White scored on Graci Rodeheaver’s sacrifice to set the stage for Dunlap.

Uniontown tied the game in the sixth when Alivia Noah and Rodeaver reached base on back-to-back singles, and with two outs, Noah scored when Tessa Livingood reached on an error for a 5-5 contest.

Juliet White tripled in the fifth, but was left stranded at third.

The Lady Red Raiders open Section 2-4A play on Tuesday when they travel to Elizabeth Forward (1-1). First pitch is scheduled for 4:15 p.m.

The Lady Rams’ Marlee Miller had three RBIs and two hits. Teammate Elyse Witocksi had two hits, including a double, and one RBI. Maggie Peters doubled for the home team.

CARMICHAELS 6, AUSTIN PREP 0 — Bailey Barnyak struck out 16 of the 25 batters she faced in throwing a two-hit shutout for the Lady Mikes in the KSA SunSational Spring Training event in Orlando, Fla.

The senior right-hander yielded two singles and walked two.

Carys McConnell drove in four runs, including an inside-the-park home run to left field that scored courtesy runner Gina Colarusso in the bottom of the third inning. Barnyak led off the frame with a single. McConnell had an RBI single in the first inning and a sacrifice flyout in the fifth. Colarusso scored on McConnell’s sacrifice after Barnyak tripled.

Kenlee Machesky doubled and courtesy runner Ainsley Simons scored on Joselyn Carter’s triple to center field in the third.

Barnyak, McConnell and Machesky had two hits apiece.

BASEBALL

CHARTIERS-HOUSTON 2, GEIBEL CATHOLIC 1 — Aaron Walsh used his speed to beat out a bunt single and scored on a wild pitch as the Buccaneers pulled out a walk-off victory in nine innings over the Gators in non-section play at EQT Park (formerly Wild Things Park) in Washington.

Walsh, who scored both runs and had two hits, advanced to second on defensive indifference, and third on a sacrifice, before scoring.

Walsh doubled, stole third and scored on Josh Hawkins’ groundout to shortstop in the third to tie the game at 1-1.

Geibel Catholic (1-1) scored in the top of the first inning when Seth Dolan singled to right field, advanced to second on an error, and with one out, touched home plate on Zane Hixson’s double to center field.

Neither team could get much offense going, and the game went into extra innings after seven frames were complete and the score remained 1-1.

The Gators loaded the bases in the eighth when Eahn Stevenson, Hixson and John Hess walked, but the Chartiers-Houston (1-1) was able to get out of the jam with a strikeout.

The Bucs’ Brady Gotfredson tripled with two outs in the bottom of the first, but Stevenson, who started at pitcher, played a grounder for the final out of the frame.

Harrison Bechtold and Kade Yoders each had a base hit for Geibel Catholic.

Stevenson yielded one earned run on four hits over five innings. He had seven strikeouts and walked two. Hixson pitched 3 â…“ frames and allowed one earned run on one hit. He struck out six and walked four.

The Gators are at Trinity Christian on Monday. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.

FRAZIER 9, SOUTHMORELAND 4 — The Commodores added three insurance runs in the sixth to down the Scotties in non-section play at Perryopolis Baseball Field.

Southmoreland (0-1) scored twice in the top of the first inning before Frazier (1-0) cut the deficit in half with one run. The Commodores added three runs in the second for a 4-2 lead, but the Scotties countered with a run of their own in the top of the third.

Frazier put up two in the bottom of the third before Southmoreland pulled within two at 6-4.

The Commodores’ Tyler Morrison had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs. Teammates Noah Bachinski and Logan Solomon had two hits and one RBI apiece.

Mayson Myers doubled and drove in one run for the Scotties.

Camden Stokes earned the victory on the mound.

CALIFORNIA 5, CARMICHAELS 3 — The Trojans’ Logan Hartley and Caleb Ross combined for seven strong innings on the mound to help their team to a non-section victory over the Mikes at Carmichaels Area High School.

Hartley allowed two runs over six innings with seven strikeouts and two walks. He earned the pitching win. Ross allowed a run, but was able to record the final three outs for the save.

California (1-0) scored three runs in the top of the first inning before Carmichaels (0-1) cut the deficit to two on Brayden Andrews’ solo home run. The Mikes scored one run in the third for a 3-2 advantage for the Trojans, who plated one in the fourth for a 4-2 lead.

The teams traded runs in the seventh inning.

Ian Grodz drove in two runs for the visitors. Teammates Weston Monticelli and Kaden Weston had one double apiece.

HOCKEY

ST. JOSEPH, IND., 6, CONNELLSVILLE 0 — The Falcons’ season will come to an end after it plays the final game in pool play at the Chipotle-USA Hockey High School 1A National Championship in Plymouth, Minn.

Connellsville’s loss to the Huskies on Thursday evening at the Maple Grove Community Center in Maple Grove, Minn., mathematically eliminated them from reaching the quarterfinals, as the top two teams in each of the four pools with the highest point total will advance.

The Falcons, who dropped their first game, 4-2, to Missoula, on Wednesday, can only achieve three points if they defeat Frisco, Texas, in their final game, while Frisco (5) and St. Joseph (4) already have accumulated more points. Connellsville can play spoiler if it tops Frisco.

The Falcons, who played the tournament without five of their regulars, trailed the Huskies, 1-0, in the first period when Oliver Hix scored the first of two goals with 4:39 remaining, which turned out to be the game winner. Jackson Troester and Cooper Roos assisted on the tally.

Carter Joo scored his first goal of the tournament in the second period for a 2-0 lead with 11:18 remaining. Marko Zielinski had the helper.

Hix’s brace, which was his fourth goal of the tournament, came with 5:55 left in the second frame. Joo and Roos added the assists.

Jackson Beatty scored twice in the third period, and Benjamin Clark scored an unassisted goal for the final tally. Joseph Bozek assisted on Beatty’s first goal, and Jackson Hix on the second.

Alexander Chorney made 12 saves for the shutout.

Nick Daniels-Nimick stopped 24 shots on goal.
