Ringgold boys basketball preview: Bertovich excited for first year as Rams’ coach
A longtime assistant coach in the Mon Valley, Shane Bertovich was hired in October to take over the Ringgold boys basketball team, and he is excited despite barely knowing the players.
Although being hired in October is not the ideal situation for a head coach, Bertovich is still appreciative of the opportunity.
“I could not be more excited,” he said. “While we got a late jump and only had three weeks of open gyms before official practice started, we as a coaching staff are excited.”
Joining Bertovich on his staff are Eric James, Alex Regal, and Kevin Feld.
Bertovich is realistic, and when asked about his expectations, he is taking a day-to-day approach.
“I expect us to improve every day,” said Bertovich. “While aware of the situation we are in, I hope we are competitive.
“My speech to the kids was we have to improve every day. If we don’t, bad things are going to happen. It will take time, and we are trying to bring stability to the program.
“The kids are working hard and want to learn.”
A pair of senior guards, Daryl Tolliver and Aidan Angotti, are returning starters.
“We are leaning on them for leadership and experience,” Bertovich said. “We have no height and only have two kids above 6-feet, but we do have quickness.”
Other players Bertovich mentioned include junior guard Szyair Dungee, junior forwards Keyshawn Goggins and Maddux Suss, sophomore guards Kaden Grayber and Andrew Rowland, freshman guard/forward Demetri Lowe, and freshman guard Braylen Lomax, as well as freshman guard/forward Chris Wilson, who will return from injury during the season.
The Rams are in Section 1-AAAAA with Bethel Park, Connellsville, Peters Township, and Trinity.
“Peters Township has a lot back and were pretty good last season, and Thomas Jefferson has some good players back,” Bertovich said. “Both Trinity and Bethel Park will be decent,” Bertovich said.
