LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Bill Self says he intends to finish his coaching career at Kansas, one day after the announcement of a lifetime contract that will pay the Hall of Famer $53 million over the first five years. The deal makes Self the most highly compensated men’s basketball coach at a public university. Self has long been rumored as a potential NBA coach, most notably with Oklahoma City and San Antonio. But he appeared to quash those rumors while speaking with a small group of reporters Wednesday, saying “I’m excited that I will finish my career here.”

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Pop Isaacs scored 19 points and Texas Tech defeated Texas A&M-Commerce 73-46 to give coach Grant McCasland a victory in his Red Raiders debut. McCasland came over from North Texas where he coached for six seasons, leading the Mean Green to the NIT championship last season. Three transfers finished in double figures for Texas Tech. Darrion Williams (Nevada) added 14 points, Joe Toussaint (West Virginia) 10 and Warren Washington (Arizona State) had eight points to go with 12 rebounds for the Red Raiders, who shot 42% to 20% for the Lions. Kalen Williams scored 13 points and Jerome Brewer Jr. 11 for the Lions.

UNDATED (AP) — Finally, No. 2 Michigan gets a test. The Wolverines have stomped through the season, crushing opponents by 34 points per game, the best margin in the country. None of those opponents has been ranked, creating some questions about just how good Michigan is. A trip to No. 9 Penn State will provide an answer. The game is one of two top 10 matchups among Week 11’s most intriguing games.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Taylor Jones had 19 points and 12 rebounds, Amina Muhammad added 14 points and 14 boards, and No. 13 Texas began its season with an 80-35 victory over Southern. Texas jumped out to a 21-7 lead after the first quarter as Southern made just 3 of 8 shots and turned it over nine times. Muhammad scored 10 points in the opening 10 minutes. Texas led 45-15 at halftime as Southern was 7-of-22 shooting with 14 turnovers. Muhammad secured her double-double in the first half with 12 points and 10 rebounds. The Longhorns were just 3 of 14 from 3-point range, but still shot 45% overall in the half. Rori Harmon, who was picked as the Big 12 preseason player of the year, had eight points, seven rebounds and nine assists.

UNDATED (AP) — An NCAA review has concluded that the officiating in the national championship game between LSU and Iowa fell short of expectations. The review was pushed up to this summer after criticism about the calls in the game. LSU beat Iowa for its first national title. NCAA vice president for women’s basketball Lynn Holzman says officials were graded on the accuracy of their calls and the overall number was lower than it should have been. She says work will be done to improve.

UNDATED (AP) — After a season that saw over a 33% increase in technical fouls, women’s college basketball is putting a renewed emphasis on sportsmanship this year. Last season there were 830 total technical fouls called, up from 606 the season before. That included a 77% increase on techs given to head coaches and a whopping 193% increase on technical fouls assessed to personnel on the bench. Fighting was also a big problem last year, including incidents in a game between George Washington and TCU as well one between Georgia and VCU. There was a 400% increase in bench personnel ejections as a result.

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy and West Virginia coach Neal Brown have leaped from the hot seat to Big 12 Coach of the Year contenders. Gundy was under scrutiny after the Cowboys lost back-to-back games to South Alabama and Iowa State in September. The team has won five straight, including a 27-24 victory over rival Oklahoma that left the Cowboys tied with Texas atop the Big 12. Brown’s West Virginia squad was picked last in the 14-team league. The Mountaineers already are bowl eligible and are one game out of the league lead. They visit No. 17 Oklahoma this week.
